    Benefits of Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists are trained professionals regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK – including Jersey. You can be confident in the knowledge that your sports physiotherapist has the required qualifications to practice safely and effectively.

Anyone with an illness or injury that impacts their ability to move or function to the required level can benefit from physiotherapy.

Here are just a few examples:

Manage health conditions – They say that if exercise were a pill then everyone would be taking it – and physios are the prescribers! Physiotherapists are trained to work with a multitude of conditions including cardiac, respiratory, arthritis and weight-related issues. Whatever your fitness level, physios will design an appropriate rehabilitation programme to help you achieve your goals.

Reduce pain – Acute and chronic pain can have a significant impact on a person’s day-to-day function. Physiotherapists are often able to advise on pain management techniques alongside gentle exercises to address the underlying cause.

Improve mobility and flexibility – There are a host of reasons why a person may experience reduced flexibility in joints. These include injury, arthritis and muscle imbalance. Physios can assess, diagnose and treat such conditions using a number of techniques.

Optimise sports performance – Sports physiotherapists have a particular interest in helping amateur and professional athletes achieve peak performance levels. By assessing muscle groups, training regimes and goals, performance physiotherapy can address any areas of weakness.

What treatment techniques do physiotherapists use?Physiotherapy

    Manual therapy
Manual therapy has been shown to be effective in contributing to the recovery of functional capabilities and is also commonly used in sports recovery.

Physiotherapists will often use manual techniques such as massage, joint mobilisation and trigger point release to help relieve pain, encourage movement and promote relaxation. They’ll use these methods alongside others to help facilitate rehabilitation and recovery.

    Exercise prescription
A personalised exercise programme is the cornerstone of recovery, rehabilitation and performance optimisation.

As part of your physiotherapy sessions, you can expect to be taught exercises targeted at your problem zones. You may also be given core and whole-body exercises to enable long-term recovery and achieving training or functional goals.

    Advice and education
Physiotherapists don’t look at an injury in isolation – they will take time to look holistically at your health and fitness. For example, if you have a back injury that just won’t go away, performance physios may look at strengthening your core. They might also offer advice on posture, movement habits and positions of comfort.

    Complementary techniques
Depending on your sport physiotherapist’s skillsets and the nature of your injury, they may offer complementary techniques such as acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) or kinesiology taping to facilitate training and recovery.
